However, the evidence is not without limitations — a 2008 review cautioned that reliable data on long-term safety and effectiveness remained insufficient at the time, an animal study from 2024 found improvements in radiological but not histopathological outcomes, and several reviews note that while findings are promising, many individual trials are small and more rigorously designed clinical studies are still needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Overall, the body of evidence leans supportive but should be interpreted with the understanding that research quality and study size vary, and MSM is generally discussed in the literature as a complementary option rather than a standalone treatment for joint conditions.
