Lavender for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 18 studies

Research suggests that lavender aromatherapy is associated with improved sleep quality across a range of populations and settings, with support from multiple randomized controlled trials, two meta-analyses, and systematic reviews consistently pointing in a positive direction. Studies indicate that lavender inhalation has shown benefits in diverse groups including cardiac and surgical ICU patients, older adults with diabetes, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and individuals with post-stroke depression, while a 2022 systematic review found positive effects in 14 of 20 trials conducted in people without diagnosed sleep disorders. A mouse study also offers preliminary mechanistic evidence, suggesting lavender's sleep-promoting effects may involve GABAergic signaling pathways in the brain, which aligns with findings from a systematic review on herbal sleep aids. Limitations worth noting include small sample sizes in many individual trials, variability in delivery methods and intervention durations, one trial showing mixed results on anxiety outcomes, and the general challenge that subjective sleep measures are susceptible to placebo effects, meaning larger and more rigorously controlled studies would strengthen the overall conclusions.
