Karela (Bitter Gourd) for Skin Health

Preliminary evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that bitter melon (Momordica charantia) may offer some benefits for skin health, primarily through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, with one animal study from 2000 finding that a water-based extract reduced chemically induced skin tumor formation and supported the body's detoxifying enzyme activity. A 2025 narrative review of the plant's bioactive compounds — including carotenoids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids — concludes that these constituents may collectively underlie reported benefits for skin conditions, and computer-based modeling research suggests certain bitter melon compounds could inhibit COX-2, a key driver of inflammation, though no human or animal testing was conducted to confirm this. The available evidence for skin-specific applications consists largely of animal studies, computational modeling, a traditional use documentation from Colombia, and a Central American ethnopharmacological review, rather than controlled human clinical trials — the one human RCT identified focused on blood sugar regulation in prediabetic adults, not skin outcomes. Overall, while the existing research is directionally supportive and points to plausible biological mechanisms, the evidence base for bitter melon as a skin health intervention remains preliminary, and well-designed human trials would be needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
