He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti) for Cognitive Function

Insufficient evidence 3 studies

Research suggests that He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti), and in particular its active compound tetrahydroxystilbene glucoside (THSG), may offer neuroprotective benefits through several biological mechanisms, including reducing oxidative stress, suppressing inflammatory signaling pathways, supporting mitochondrial function, and promoting neuronal health. Studies indicate that these effects may be relevant to cognitive decline, depression-like states, and protection against environmental neurotoxins such as PM2.5. However, all three available studies are preclinical in nature — two conducted in cell cultures or animal models and one in mice exposed to particulate matter — meaning none of this research has been conducted in humans. Until clinical trials are available, the relevance of these findings to human cognitive function remains uncertain, and the current evidence should be interpreted with caution.
