Cleavers for Skin Health

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that the available evidence specifically supporting cleavers (Galium aparine) for skin health is quite limited, with only one directly relevant laboratory study — a 2020 in vitro investigation — finding that water-based infusions of the herb demonstrated immune-stimulating and antioxidant activity in cell-based assays, which the authors cautiously noted offered partial scientific support for its traditional use as a topical remedy for skin infections and wound care. The remaining studies provided to inform this summary are largely unrelated to cleavers, instead covering topics such as peanut allergy prevention, xeroderma pigmentosum, UV-induced DNA damage, and occupational melanoma risk in flight crews, none of which bear directly on the herb's effects. Because the single relevant study was conducted entirely in laboratory settings rather than in humans, no conclusions can be drawn about how cleavers performs as a skin treatment in clinical practice. Overall, the current research base is too sparse and preliminary to characterize the effectiveness of cleavers for skin health with any confidence, and human trials would be needed to meaningfully evaluate the traditional claims surrounding this plant.
