Chamomile Tea for Skin Health

Research suggests that chamomile, particularly German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), holds meaningful promise for skin health, with multiple reviews pointing to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, photoprotective, wound-healing, and antimicrobial properties — effects attributed primarily to bioactive compounds such as α-bisabolol, chamazulene, and various flavonoids. Studies indicate that chamomile-derived ingredients appear in topical formulations targeting conditions like UV-induced skin damage, inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and rosacea, and general skin aging, with one 2008 review specifically identifying chamomile as a candidate alternative to conventional pharmaceutical treatments for chronic inflammatory skin conditions. The body of evidence consists largely of narrative and systematic reviews rather than dedicated randomized controlled trials for chamomile specifically, and authors across multiple reviews consistently note that more rigorous, long-term clinical studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Importantly, the research also highlights a meaningful safety caveat: bisabolol, a key chamomile constituent widely used in cosmetics, can cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitized individuals, and cross-reactivity with other plants in the aster family has been reported, suggesting that chamomile-containing products are not universally well tolerated.
