Agnus Castus for Pms Relief

Strong evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree berry) may help reduce common PMS symptoms such as pain, mood disturbances, bloating, and breast discomfort, with two randomized controlled trials reporting statistically significant symptom improvements compared to placebo, and a 2012 double-blind trial in particular providing stronger methodological support for this direction. A 2014 systematic review of herbal and acupuncture interventions also found that most herbal treatments including Vitex agnus-castus showed meaningful symptom reductions, though the authors noted that inconsistent diagnostic criteria and variable study designs limit how confidently conclusions can be drawn. Supporting evidence also comes from a smaller real-world study combining Vitex agnus-castus with vitamin B6 and magnesium, and a case report highlighting the herb's possible role in regulating prolactin through dopaminergic pathways, which may partly explain its effects on menstrual-related symptoms. A broader 2016 review of botanicals used by women cautioned that many such supplements, including those for PMS, have not been subjected to rigorous enough clinical testing to firmly establish their safety or effectiveness, and that potential interactions with medications remain incompletely understood, so the overall evidence, while generally supportive, should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
