Zinc for Eye Health

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that zinc plays a supportive role in eye health, particularly in relation to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), with multiple reviews spanning nearly three decades consistently reporting that zinc is concentrated in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, contributes to antioxidant defense systems in ocular tissues, and is a component of the well-studied AREDS supplement formula shown to slow progression of intermediate-to-advanced AMD. The body of evidence reviewed here consists primarily of narrative and comprehensive reviews rather than original randomized controlled trials, and while the overall direction is supportive, several reviews note that the evidence for broad supplementation remains inconsistent, the precise molecular mechanisms by which zinc protects the outer retina are not fully understood, and high-quality clinical trials are still needed to establish optimal intake levels and clarify benefits beyond AMD. A smaller number of studies point to additional potential applications, including one experimental study demonstrating that zinc pyrithione can reduce corneal tissue damage from bacterial infections, though this research is preliminary. Overall, while the literature generally supports the importance of adequate zinc status for maintaining eye health, findings are mixed regarding the strength of evidence for routine supplementation, and researchers consistently call for further long-term studies and personalized nutritional approaches.
