Walnuts for Gut Health

Moderate evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that walnuts may offer modest benefits for gut health, primarily through their fiber content, phenolic compounds, and potential to support beneficial gut bacteria, though the overall evidence is mixed and effect sizes appear small. A 2020 meta-analysis of nine randomized controlled trials found that nut consumption — including walnuts — significantly increased beneficial bacterial genera such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, while a larger 2025 meta-analysis pooling 28 trials concluded that nuts produce only modest changes in gut microbial diversity and composition overall, with some increases in propionate, a beneficial short-chain fatty acid. Narrative reviews and smaller studies suggest walnuts may offer some protection against certain gastrointestinal conditions and deliver high levels of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity that become most accessible during colonic fermentation, and a small pilot study in shift workers found that walnut consumption appeared to buffer a dip in microbial diversity associated with night shift work, though that study involved only 13 participants and cannot support broad conclusions. Across the body of evidence, researchers consistently note important limitations including small sample sizes, substantial variation in study designs, and a lack of walnut-specific trials, meaning that firmer conclusions about walnuts and gut health will require larger, more rigorously controlled research.
