Vitex (Chasteberry) for Hormonal Balance

Research suggests that Vitex agnus-castus and related Vitex species may influence reproductive hormonal pathways, with studies pointing toward effects on prolactin, LH, FSH, estradiol, and androgen signaling in contexts ranging from PCOS to menopausal symptoms. The available evidence includes a small prospective study in women with PCOS, a 2024 animal model study using Vitex negundo, two reviews synthesizing laboratory and human data, a Canadian pharmacy survey noting chaste tree as a commonly available menopausal remedy, and intriguing wildlife research showing that naturally occurring progesterone-like compounds in Vitex species can measurably alter reproductive hormone levels in wild primates. The overall direction of the human-relevant literature is broadly supportive, but meaningful limitations apply throughout: the clinical human studies are few, small, and in some cases involve combination treatments that make it difficult to isolate Vitex's specific contribution, while animal and computational findings cannot be directly extrapolated to human outcomes.
