Vitamin E for Eye Health

Moderate evidence 38 studies

Research suggests that vitamin E may play a role in supporting eye health, particularly in relation to age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, though the evidence is mixed and context-dependent. Two reviews found the strongest support for vitamin E as part of combination antioxidant formulas — notably the AREDS formula — for slowing progression of moderate-to-high-risk AMD, while evidence for standalone vitamin E benefits or its effects on other eye conditions such as cataracts, dry eye, and diabetic retinopathy was less conclusive. A cross-sectional observational study using NHANES data found higher dietary vitamin E intake associated with lower cataract incidence, and a broader 2023 review emphasized adequate vitamin E intake as relevant to overall ocular health, but both sources acknowledge that observational designs cannot establish causation and that further research is needed to clarify optimal intake levels. Taken together, the available studies — which include reviews, observational analyses, and limited trial data — suggest that vitamin E is most likely beneficial as one component of a broader nutritional approach to eye health rather than as a singular intervention, and readers should be aware that findings vary across study designs and populations.
