Vitamin D for Immune Function

Moderate evidence 45 studies

Research suggests that vitamin D plays a meaningful role in regulating immune function, with studies consistently showing that immune cells — including T cells, B cells, and macrophages — carry vitamin D receptors and can even convert vitamin D into its active form locally, pointing to a direct modulatory role rather than a purely systemic one. Reviews and observational studies indicate that low vitamin D levels are associated with higher susceptibility to infections, autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory diseases, while supplementation appears to offer modest protective benefits particularly for those who are deficient. However, the evidence from randomized controlled trials and clinical interventions has been notably mixed, with some individuals appearing to respond more robustly than others — a variability that researchers have linked in part to genetic differences in how people's immune cells respond to vitamin D. Animal and preclinical models, including a fish study examining skin immunity and a mouse study using a dietary mushroom source of vitamin D, add mechanistic support to the human findings, though these cannot be directly extrapolated to human health outcomes, and overall the research points to benefit primarily for those with confirmed deficiency rather than as a broad immune-boosting strategy.
