Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia) for Libido And Sexual Function

Moderate evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) may support libido and sexual function in both animal and human contexts, with evidence pointing toward testosterone elevation, improved copulatory performance, and enhanced sperm parameters as potential mechanisms. The available evidence includes one 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in men reporting improvements in erectile function, self-reported libido, sperm motility, and semen volume, alongside multiple animal studies in rats and boars demonstrating effects on sexual behavior, hormone levels, and fertility markers, as well as mechanistic cell-level research identifying aromatase inhibition as one likely pathway through which the plant's primary active compound, eurycomanone, may raise testosterone. A clinical trial protocol for perimenopausal and postmenopausal women has been registered but has not yet reported results, leaving the question of benefit for women largely unanswered in the current literature. Overall the direction of evidence leans supportive, but the human clinical data remain limited in quantity and scale, most animal findings cannot be directly extrapolated to people, and independent replication of the human trial results would strengthen confidence in these findings.
