Tongkat Ali (Longjack) for Weight Management

Preliminary evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that Tongkat Ali may support weight management through several biological mechanisms, including inhibiting fat cell development, promoting fat breakdown via PKA signaling pathways, and reducing fat accumulation in the liver. The bulk of the available evidence comes from preclinical sources — cell culture experiments and animal studies using mice and rats — with only limited human data, including one small randomized controlled trial that tested Tongkat Ali in combination with a citrus extract rather than as a standalone ingredient, and one double-blind placebo-controlled trial in men that found reductions in fat mass specifically among overweight participants. Studies indicate a generally consistent direction of support across these findings, with effects observed on body weight, abdominal fat, triglycerides, and metabolic markers under high-fat diet conditions, though the extrapolation of animal and cell-based results to humans remains uncertain and the human trials conducted so far have been small, short-term, or complicated by combination formulas that make it difficult to isolate Tongkat Ali's specific contribution.
