Research suggests that Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) has a reasonably consistent body of evidence supporting its ability to raise testosterone levels in men, drawn from a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis, multiple randomized controlled trials, and several supporting reviews, with the direction of findings largely favorable across both healthy men and those with clinically low testosterone. Studies indicate that proposed mechanisms include stimulation of Leydig cell testosterone production and possible modulation of the adrenal hormone pathway, and some research points to additional benefits for stress hormone reduction, sexual health, sperm quality, and bone preservation in androgen-deficient conditions. However, the overall evidence base carries meaningful limitations: most individual trials are small and short in duration, one 2024 systematic review noted that the majority of commercially marketed testosterone boosters broadly fail to outperform placebo and identified Eurycoma longifolia as among only a small number of exceptions, a 2023 study in trained rugby players found no meaningful hormonal or performance effects over seven days, and safety reviews have flagged rare but documented cases of liver injury associated with supplement use. The current consensus among researchers is that findings are promising enough to warrant further investigation but that larger, more rigorous clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
