Taurine for Anti-Aging

Preliminary evidence 29 studies

Research suggests that taurine may play a meaningful role in slowing aspects of biological aging, with supporting evidence spanning animal studies, genetic models, computational analyses, and mechanistic laboratory work. Studies indicate that taurine depletion in mice accelerates aging and shortens lifespan, while taurine supplementation has been shown to reduce markers of cellular senescence, oxidative stress, and inflammation in contexts ranging from brain tissue to pancreatic beta-cells, and a Mendelian randomization study suggests causal links between taurine levels and immune cell populations relevant to skin aging. Mechanistic research points to several possible pathways, including suppression of the NLRP3 inflammasome associated with age-related chronic inflammation, disruption of pro-senescence protein interactions in insulin-producing cells, and preservation of protein folding quality — though most of this evidence comes from animal and cell-based studies rather than controlled human clinical trials, which represents a significant limitation in drawing firm conclusions about effects in people. Reviews have characterized taurine as a promising candidate for anti-aging strategies given its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and favorable safety profile, but human interventional evidence remains limited, and some studies included in the broader literature address related topics such as wound healing and muscle biology where taurine's anti-aging role is more indirect.
