Tart Cherry Juice for Anti-Inflammatory

Strong evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that tart cherry juice has meaningful anti-inflammatory properties, with multiple randomized controlled trials, reviews, and a meta-analysis collectively indicating that its bioactive compounds — particularly anthocyanins and polyphenols — can reduce markers of inflammation such as C-reactive protein, support recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage, and may suppress inflammatory signaling pathways relevant to conditions like gout. Studies indicate these effects have been observed across different populations, including athletes, older adults, and individuals with elevated uric acid levels, lending some breadth to the findings. However, the evidence is not uniformly strong — some trials found only modest or statistically non-significant reductions in certain inflammatory markers, one well-controlled crossover trial found no advantage over a conventional sports drink for exercise recovery outcomes, and several reviews note that study designs vary considerably in terms of dosing protocols, exercise models, and participant characteristics, making direct comparisons difficult. Overall, the body of evidence leans supportive but researchers consistently call for larger, more standardized trials before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
