Sulforaphane for Anti-Inflammatory

Moderate evidence 29 studies

Research suggests that sulforaphane possesses meaningful anti-inflammatory properties, acting through multiple molecular pathways — most prominently by activating the Nrf2 antioxidant defense pathway and suppressing the pro-inflammatory NF-κB signaling cascade, while also inhibiting inflammatory cytokines, COX-2, iNOS, and inflammasome activity. Studies indicate that these effects have been observed across a range of experimental contexts, including animal models of psoriasis, Crohn's-like disease, and diabetic wound healing, as well as cell-based studies examining immune cell behavior in conditions relevant to neurodegeneration, eye disease, and chronic inflammation. The body of evidence is composed predominantly of preclinical studies — including laboratory cell experiments, animal models, and review articles synthesizing that work — with notably limited large-scale human clinical trial data, which represents a significant gap in translating these findings to confirmed therapeutic use in people. Adding nuance, some findings are context-dependent or mixed: one study in placental tissue found sulforaphane simultaneously suppressed both pro- and anti-inflammatory markers depending on whether infection was present, and a 2024 review highlighted sulforaphane's paradoxical capacity to act as both an antioxidant and a pro-oxidant, with effects that can shift depending on the biological environment and health state of the organism.
