Steam Inhalation for Sinus And Congestion Relief

Research suggests that steam inhalation produces mixed results depending on the condition being treated and how outcomes are measured. Several randomized controlled trials examining common cold symptoms found no meaningful benefit from steam inhalation, with some studies showing placebo groups performing equally well or slightly better on objective measures of nasal airflow resistance, while an earlier RCT from 1987 did find statistically significant symptom relief and improved airflow in cold sufferers. Studies indicate more promising findings in the context of allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, where steam appears to offer modest subjective relief and, when combined with mucolytic medications, may produce measurable reductions in sinus membrane thickening, though a large UK trial found no significant benefit for chronic sinus symptoms overall despite noting some reduction in headache. The evidence base is further complicated by small sample sizes in several supportive studies, lack of control groups in some trials, and the difficulty of blinding participants to whether they are receiving steam, all of which limit how confidently conclusions can be drawn.
