Studies indicate that pain relief specifically is a more contested finding — several trials report no statistically significant difference in pain scores between serratiopeptidase and control groups, even when swelling outcomes favor the enzyme, making the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects difficult to cleanly separate. The broader evidence base includes multiple narrative reviews and a 2013 systematic review that collectively caution against strong conclusions, citing small sample sizes, inconsistent dosing protocols, poorly defined outcome measures, and an incomplete understanding of how the enzyme behaves in the human body.
