Schisandra for Exercise Performance

Moderate evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that Schisandra may offer modest benefits relevant to exercise performance, including improvements in muscle strength, stress buffering during intense physical activity, and reduced lactic acid accumulation, though the evidence base is limited and results are mixed. The available studies include two randomized controlled trials, several animal and cell-based studies, a computational pharmacology analysis, and one narrative review — with human trial evidence being sparse and drawn from relatively small samples. Studies indicate that the most credible human evidence comes from a 12-week RCT in older adults showing meaningful gains in knee extensor strength without corresponding changes in muscle mass, and a small trial using a Schisandra-containing herbal blend in athletes that found reductions in fatigue and liver stress markers but no broader performance outcomes. Overall, while preclinical findings point to plausible mechanisms involving cortisol regulation, energy metabolism, and anti-fatigue pathways, the current body of evidence is too preliminary and methodologically limited to draw firm conclusions, and a 2013 review cautions that supplement marketing in this area frequently outpaces the actual science.
