Schisandra for Anti-Aging

Preliminary evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that Schisandra and its bioactive compounds — particularly lignans such as gomisin A, schisandrin, deoxyschisandrin, and schisandrin B — may exert anti-aging effects through several interconnected mechanisms, including scavenging reactive oxygen species, reducing cellular senescence markers, suppressing inflammatory signaling pathways, promoting mitochondrial biogenesis, and boosting NAD+ levels, a molecule closely tied to cellular energy metabolism and aging. Studies indicate that these compounds can protect skin cells from UV-induced oxidative damage and slow stress-induced aging processes in human fibroblast cell models, while broader reviews catalog anti-aging activity alongside antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties. The available evidence, however, consists almost entirely of in vitro cell studies, animal experiments, and narrative reviews, with a notable absence of human clinical trials or randomized controlled studies specifically evaluating anti-aging outcomes, which substantially limits the strength of conclusions that can be drawn. Additionally, practical challenges such as the poor bioavailability of key compounds like schisandrin due to extensive first-pass metabolism suggest that translating these laboratory findings into meaningful human benefit remains an open and unresolved question.
