Rosehip for Wound Healing

Preliminary evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that rosehip oil and its extracts show meaningful promise as topical agents for wound healing and scar reduction, with the available evidence spanning animal studies, laboratory cell models, and nanoemulsion formulation research, all pointing in a broadly supportive direction. Studies indicate that rosehip oil may accelerate wound closure, improve scar quality, support collagen synthesis, and reduce inflammation, with proposed mechanisms including a shift in macrophage activity from pro-inflammatory to tissue-repairing states, enhanced expression of repair proteins such as VEGF and TGF-β, and antioxidant activity linked to its high linoleic acid content. One 2025 study found rosehip seed oil outperformed olive oil in both cell-based and rat wound models, and a separate study found encouraging results for oral ulcer healing, while formulation research suggests that nanoemulsion delivery systems may enhance how effectively the oil penetrates and acts on skin tissue. However, the two human clinical trials identified in a 2024 review represent the only direct evidence in people, and reviewers across multiple papers consistently note that the current body of research is too limited and methodologically varied to draw firm conclusions, underscoring the need for larger and more rigorous human trials before the evidence can be considered definitive.
