Rosehip for Joint Pain Relief

Strong evidence 22 studies

Research suggests that rosehip powder, derived from Rosa canina, may offer modest relief from joint pain associated with osteoarthritis, with the evidence base including multiple randomized controlled trials, several systematic reviews, a meta-analysis, and mechanistic laboratory studies — nearly all pointing in a supportive direction. The meta-analysis pooled data from three trials involving 287 participants and found that patients were roughly twice as likely to respond to rosehip treatment as to placebo, while systematic reviews have consistently rated the evidence as promising, though moderate in strength. Studies indicate that rosehip's effects may be explained by a range of active compounds — including galactolipids, phenolics, and triterpene acids — that appear to reduce inflammatory signaling, suppress cartilage-degrading enzymes, and lower markers of inflammation such as C-reactive protein, with one biomechanical trial also showing improvements in knee function during walking. However, important limitations run throughout this body of evidence: the clinical trials are generally small, several were funded by the same manufacturer, long-term data are lacking, and researchers across multiple reviews have consistently called for larger, independent trials before firmer conclusions about efficacy can be drawn.
