Red Clover for Bone Health

Moderate evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that red clover isoflavones may offer modest support for bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, with a 2016 systematic review of 23 randomized controlled trials concluding that isoflavones likely help prevent bone loss during menopause, and a 2015 placebo-controlled trial finding that women taking red clover extract maintained lumbar spine bone density while the placebo group experienced a significant decline. A 2025 review and a 2020 review of isoflavone evidence similarly identified bone health as one of the more promising areas of research, though both noted inconsistent findings across studies. However, not all evidence points in the same direction — a 2014 review concluded that red clover and soy isoflavones are largely ineffective for preventing menopausal bone loss, and several broader reviews of phytoestrogens and supplemental nutrients describe the overall body of evidence as inconclusive, with researchers noting that factors such as genetics, individual metabolism, study duration, and dosing may help explain the variability in results. Overall, while red clover isoflavones show some promise as a complement to bone health strategies in postmenopausal women, the research remains mixed and more rigorous long-term trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
