Pumpkin Seed Extract for Prostate Health

Strong evidence 21 studies

Research suggests that pumpkin seed extract and pumpkin seed oil may help reduce urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, with the available evidence spanning animal studies, in vitro cell research, uncontrolled pilot trials, longer-term observational studies, multiple narrative reviews, and a small number of randomized controlled trials. Studies indicate a generally consistent direction of benefit, including improvements in standardized prostate symptom scores, nighttime urination frequency, and quality of life measures, with one RCT reporting symptom relief comparable to the pharmaceutical agent tamsulosin, and preclinical research pointing to possible mechanisms involving reduced prostate weight and lower PSA levels. The body of evidence is uniformly supportive in direction, though important limitations temper confidence in these findings, including small sample sizes, the absence of placebo controls in several trials, reliance on subjective symptom questionnaires, and a predominance of narrative reviews over higher-order systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Overall, pumpkin seed preparations appear to be well-tolerated and show promise as a phytotherapeutic option for prostate-related urinary symptoms, but the current evidence base is not yet robust enough to draw firm conclusions about the magnitude or durability of any benefit.
