Propolis for Wound Healing

Moderate evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that propolis shows meaningful promise as a wound-healing agent, with a substantial body of evidence — including a 2023 meta-analysis of 43 studies, multiple systematic reviews, and several preclinical studies — consistently indicating that propolis can support wound closure, reduce inflammation, fight bacterial infection, and promote tissue regeneration across wound types including burns, ulcers, and surgical wounds. Studies indicate that these effects appear to be driven by propolis's rich content of flavonoids, polyphenols, and phenolic acids, which work through mechanisms such as suppressing pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, inhibiting biofilm formation, and stimulating new blood vessel and collagen formation, with emerging research also exploring its potential when delivered via nanofiber dressings or hydrogel formulations for more targeted effect. The overall direction of the evidence is supportive, though most findings come from animal studies and laboratory experiments rather than large-scale human clinical trials, and researchers consistently note important limitations including variability in propolis composition across geographic sources, a lack of standardized dosing, and insufficient data on side effects. One review examining propolis in a specific dental surgery context returned mixed findings, and several authors across the literature caution that while the evidence base is growing, more rigorous and well-controlled clinical research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn about its use in routine wound care.
