Propolis for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 16 studies

Research suggests that propolis may support various aspects of immune function, with the majority of available evidence coming from animal studies — including mice, poultry, and honeybees — that generally show positive effects such as enhanced antibody production, improved macrophage activity, reduced inflammation, and protection against oxidative stress-related immune suppression. Studies indicate that specific compounds in propolis, particularly Artepillin C and flavonoids like quercetin and apigenin, may underlie these effects through multiple immune signaling pathways, and one mouse study found propolis helped restore immune markers in chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression. However, the human evidence is limited and less convincing — the only randomized trial in people found no meaningful or lasting improvements in immune markers among older adults taking propolis for 12 weeks, with only a transient rise in one antibody type at the midpoint. Overall, while the preclinical research is broadly supportive, the translation of these findings to humans remains uncertain, and the body of evidence is not yet sufficient to draw firm conclusions about propolis as an immune-supporting supplement in people.
