Pomegranate for Exercise Performance

Moderate evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that pomegranate supplementation may offer modest benefits for exercise performance and recovery, particularly by supporting blood flow, reducing exercise-induced oxidative stress and inflammation, and improving endurance in certain contexts. The evidence base includes multiple randomized controlled trials, several systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and broader reviews of fruit-based supplements, with the overall direction leaning cautiously positive but with considerable nuance. Studies indicate that performance benefits appear most consistent when pomegranate products are relatively high in polyphenols, consumed with adequate time before exercise, and evaluated in the context of endurance or intermittent high-intensity efforts rather than resistance exercise repetitions or elite cycling time trials — and one trial found that combining pomegranate with beetroot juice did not enhance and may have slightly reduced explosive performance compared to beetroot juice alone. Findings also vary by sex, fitness level, and exercise type, and a 2022 analysis of commercial products highlighted wide variation in actual polyphenol content across different pomegranate supplements, meaning the quality and composition of the specific product used may substantially influence whether any benefit is observed.
