Oregano Oil for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that oregano essential oil and related extracts possess meaningful antioxidant properties, primarily attributed to phenolic compounds such as carvacrol, thymol, and rosmarinic acid, with multiple laboratory and applied studies demonstrating free radical-scavenging activity and protection against lipid oxidation in food systems and biological models. Studies indicate that the available evidence comes largely from in vitro experiments, animal studies, and food science applications rather than human clinical trials, and findings generally support antioxidant activity across several oregano species, including Origanum vulgare, Origanum onites, Lippia graveolens, and Lippia origanoides, though the strength of that activity varies depending on the plant species, geographic origin, harvest timing, extraction method, and whether the whole essential oil or a phenolic extract is being tested. Notably, some studies found that ethanol or water extracts outperformed the essential oil itself in antioxidant assays, and at least two food application studies reported mixed results, with oregano oil failing to fully control lipid oxidation under certain storage conditions. The overall body of evidence is directionally positive but limited in its applicability to human health outcomes, as most studies were conducted in controlled laboratory or agricultural settings rather than in human subjects.
