Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Brain Health

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, play meaningful roles in brain health, with observational studies and reviews linking higher omega-3 levels to greater hippocampal and entorhinal cortex volume, better memory recall and processing speed, and improved attention in both older adults and adolescents. Studies indicate that DHA serves a structural role in neuronal membranes, EPA may be most relevant to mood-related outcomes, and emerging molecular research points to omega-3-derived compounds that appear to modulate neuroinflammation through specific receptor pathways — though much of this mechanistic work remains early-stage. The evidence base includes narrative reviews, cross-sectional studies, and a limited number of clinical trials, and findings are not uniformly consistent across populations, life stages, or cognitive outcomes, with at least one review of common memory supplement ingredients finding no compelling evidence that omega-3s improve memory specifically. Taken together, the body of research is suggestive but not yet definitive, with reviewers repeatedly calling for larger, more rigorous trials and clearer distinctions between the effects of individual omega-3 fatty acids before firm recommendations for brain health can be established.
