Oil Pulling

Home & Folk Remedies

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil, most commonly coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil, in the mouth for ten to twenty minutes before spitting it out. Research suggests that this practice may help reduce harmful oral bacteria, particularly Streptococcus mutans, and some studies indicate it could support improvements in plaque levels, gingivitis, and overall oral hygiene when used alongside regular brushing and flossing. Coconut oil has drawn particular interest due to its lauric acid content, which has demonstrated antimicrobial properties in laboratory settings. While proponents also associate oil pulling with broader detoxification benefits, scientific evidence for effects beyond oral health remains limited, and more rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are needed to fully understand its potential.
