Research suggests that NMN supplementation may offer modest benefits for exercise-related outcomes, including aerobic capacity, lower limb function, walking endurance, and markers of physical performance, with several randomized controlled trials and a systematic review pointing in a generally supportive direction. Studies indicate these effects may be most pronounced in middle-aged and older adults, and animal research raises the possibility that NMN and exercise together could work synergistically to counter age-related physical decline. However, the evidence is far from settled — a 2022 review concluded that NMN does not meaningfully improve muscle metabolism or athletic performance in healthy individuals without NAD deficiency, a high-dose RCT found no significant effect on physical performance or muscle strength, and a 2026 trial raised the unexpected concern that NMN's anti-inflammatory effects might interfere with a muscle repair process involving mitochondrial transfer after exercise. Taken together, the body of evidence is mixed and limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and variation in doses and populations, meaning firmer conclusions will require larger and longer trials designed to better identify who, if anyone, is most likely to benefit.
