N-Acetyl Cysteine (Nac) for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 18 studies

Research suggests that NAC may support antioxidant defenses through several overlapping mechanisms, with the most directly relevant finding coming from a 2023 laboratory study showing that NAC suppressed SARS-CoV-2 replication across multiple viral variants in human lung cells and a humanized mouse model, an effect the researchers attributed to NAC's antioxidant properties interfering with reactive oxygen species that the virus depends on early in infection. A clinical trial investigating a combination of metabolic activators that included NAC precursors found that treated COVID-19 patients recovered faster and showed improved antioxidant markers compared to placebo, though the multi-ingredient nature of the formula makes it difficult to attribute those effects to any single component. The broader body of studies linked here spans cell culture experiments, animal models, and one human clinical trial, with most work touching on oxidative stress and antioxidant pathways in adjacent contexts — such as cancer, liver disease, and gut repair — rather than testing NAC directly or in isolation. Taken together, the evidence is mechanistically plausible but remains largely preliminary, and the studies reviewed here were not designed to evaluate NAC supplementation on its own, meaning the overall picture warrants cautious interpretation until more targeted human trials are available.
