Myrrh for Wound Healing

Strong evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that myrrh may support wound healing across a range of wound types, including episiotomy wounds, post-extraction oral wounds, skin lacerations, and surgical sites, with the majority of available studies pointing in a positive direction. Two randomized controlled trials examining episiotomy healing found that myrrh sitz baths produced significantly better outcomes than standard care, while cell and animal studies indicate that myrrh may promote healing by stimulating fibroblast migration, upregulating growth factors like VEGF and TGF-β1, modulating macrophage activity, and exhibiting antimicrobial properties. Studies indicate that novel delivery formats such as nanofiber scaffolds and specially designed gauze incorporating myrrh also show early promise in laboratory and animal settings, and a clinical trial found myrrh mouthwash supported early healing after tooth extraction. However, important limitations temper these findings: most studies are small in scale, many rely on animal or laboratory models that may not translate directly to humans, a retrospective clinical study noted a higher complication rate among patients using myrrh unsupervised after hemorrhoidectomy, and a dental implant trial found no significant difference between myrrh and chlorhexidine mouthwash, underscoring that the evidence base, while encouraging, remains preliminary and calls for larger and more rigorously controlled human trials before firm conclusions can be drawn.
