Moringa for Cholesterol Management

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that Moringa oleifera and related species may have favorable effects on cholesterol management, with a consistent pattern across multiple study types showing reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, alongside increases in HDL cholesterol. The body of evidence reviewed here includes animal studies in rats and fish, observational data from human patients in Ethiopia, and a systematic review of nine randomized controlled trials in people living with HIV — nearly all pointing in a supportive direction, though one study on moray eels and one on catfish were included primarily as context and did not directly test moringa's cholesterol effects in humans. Studies indicate that bioactive compounds in moringa leaves, such as quercetin and kaempferol, are thought to underlie these lipid-modifying effects, and benefits have been observed across a range of models including obesity-induced cardiovascular stress, diabetes, and diabetic kidney disease. However, the evidence base has meaningful limitations: most human-relevant findings come from animal models that do not always translate to people, the single systematic review of human trials drew from a relatively small number of qualifying studies in a specific patient population, and the one observational human study compared patients across two different hospitals rather than using a randomized design, making it difficult to rule out confounding factors.
