Molecular Hydrogen for Anti-Inflammatory

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that molecular hydrogen exerts anti-inflammatory effects through multiple proposed mechanisms, including selective scavenging of harmful reactive oxygen species, suppression of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways such as NF-κB and STAT3, and reduction of inflammatory cytokines, with supporting evidence drawn from animal models, cell studies, and a smaller number of human investigations across conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease to neurological injury and metabolic disorders. The available literature consists predominantly of reviews and preclinical studies rather than large randomized controlled trials, and while the overall direction of findings is supportive, the authors of these reviews consistently note that the evidence base remains early-stage and that larger, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy, optimize delivery methods, and establish appropriate protocols. Studies indicate that hydrogen may be administered through several routes including hydrogen-rich water, gas inhalation, and intravenous injection, and its apparent tolerability and low cost are frequently cited as favorable characteristics worth investigating further. Nonetheless, the current body of evidence should be interpreted cautiously, as most conclusions are drawn from animal models and mechanistic research rather than robust human clinical data, and the field has not yet produced the scale of trials necessary to draw firm therapeutic conclusions.
