Marshmallow Root for Sore Throat Relief

Moderate evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) may help relieve sore throat and related symptoms through its mucilage-rich polysaccharides, which are thought to coat and soothe irritated throat tissue, and laboratory studies have also identified antibacterial and antitussive properties in its extracts. The evidence base includes two randomized controlled trials, several formulation and laboratory studies, and one review article, most of which point in a supportive direction — one RCT found that a multi-herb syrup containing marshmallow root improved cough and mucus clearance symptoms in patients with respiratory complaints, while another found a marshmallow-containing herbal extract helped children with viral tonsillitis recover more quickly compared to standard care alone, though in both cases marshmallow was one of several active ingredients rather than the sole treatment studied. Studies indicate that isolating marshmallow root's specific contribution is difficult given that most clinical research tests it in combination products, and one animal study introduced a note of caution by finding that marshmallow root extract, despite showing antibacterial effects in laboratory conditions, failed to produce meaningful benefit in a living animal model of throat infection. Overall, the research is encouraging but largely preliminary, with most studies being small, short-term, or conducted outside of human clinical settings, meaning firmer conclusions about its effectiveness as a standalone treatment for sore throat await more rigorous investigation.
