Manganese for Bone Health

Moderate evidence 22 studies

Research suggests that manganese plays a meaningful role in bone health, with review-level evidence indicating it promotes bone-forming cell activity and suppresses bone-resorbing cell activity through identifiable biological mechanisms, while broader reviews of trace minerals consistently list manganese deficiency as a factor in reduced bone mass across the lifespan. The available evidence base consists primarily of reviews, observational studies using national survey data, and laboratory or animal research rather than controlled human clinical trials, which limits the strength of conclusions that can be drawn. Studies indicate the picture is notably mixed: while mechanistic and epidemiological research supports a role for adequate manganese in skeletal integrity, at least one observational study in children and adolescents found higher manganese exposure associated with lower bone mineral density, and one review of North American dietary patterns concluded that most people already obtain sufficient manganese through food and that supplemental doses may be unnecessary or potentially harmful. Taken together, the research points to manganese as a biologically relevant mineral for bone metabolism, but the absence of robust human clinical trials and the presence of conflicting findings in population-level studies mean that its precise role and the value of supplementation remain open questions.
