Lemon Balm for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that lemon balm may offer modest benefits for sleep quality, particularly when combined with other calming herbs such as valerian, though the evidence is mixed and the picture is far from settled. Several supportive studies are available, including a 2013 randomized controlled trial finding that a valerian-lemon balm combination significantly reduced sleep disturbances in menopausal women, a placebo-controlled trial showing improvements in sleep and emotional well-being with a specialized phospholipid-based lemon balm formulation, and multiple reviews proposing that lemon balm's bioactive compounds may work by modulating GABA receptors in the brain, similar in principle to conventional sleep medications. However, two more recent randomized controlled trials found no significant improvements in sleep quality versus placebo — one testing lemon balm alone in adults with type 2 diabetes and depression, and another testing a multi-ingredient combination that actually showed slightly greater improvements in the placebo group — and several open-label studies lack the placebo controls needed to rule out expectation effects. Overall, while the mechanistic rationale is plausible and some trial results are encouraging, the current body of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, inconsistent study designs, the frequent use of combination products rather than lemon balm in isolation, and a general need for more rigorous and larger randomized controlled trials before firm conclusions can be drawn.
