Legumes & Beans for Weight Management

Moderate evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that legumes and beans may support weight management primarily through their high fiber content, low glycemic index, and potential to promote satiety, with multiple reviews and at least one randomized controlled trial indicating meaningful reductions in body weight, fat mass, and BMI when bean-derived compounds or regular bean consumption are incorporated into the diet. Studies indicate that chickpeas, hummus, and common beans are associated with higher overall diet quality and favorable metabolic markers, while dietary fiber — abundant in legumes — appears to contribute to feelings of fullness and blood sugar regulation, both of which are relevant to weight control. However, the evidence is not uniformly consistent: one randomized controlled trial found that bean-based preloads increased self-reported fullness in normal-weight adults but did not lead to meaningfully lower calorie intake at subsequent meals, and the effect was not observed in adults with overweight, suggesting satiety benefits may not straightforwardly translate to reduced food consumption. Additionally, some included studies are reviews rather than controlled trials, one RCT tested a concentrated extract rather than whole foods, and contextual factors such as cooking methods and preparation — as well as the gap between people's positive attitudes toward beans and their actual consumption habits — are worth considering when interpreting the overall body of evidence.
