L-Tyrosine for Cognitive Function

Moderate evidence 27 studies

Research suggests that L-tyrosine, as a precursor to catecholamine neurotransmitters like dopamine, may support certain aspects of cognitive function, particularly in populations under physiological stress or nutritional deficiency. The available evidence includes a small number of randomized controlled trials — notably a double-blind crossover trial in women with anorexia nervosa showing improved reaction times and memory performance, and a study using a multi-ingredient nutrient bar showing acute improvements in alertness, attention, and working memory — as well as animal studies suggesting neuroprotective effects and preservation of synaptic plasticity under conditions of reduced cerebral blood flow. However, the evidence base carries important limitations: most trials involve multiple-ingredient formulas rather than isolated L-tyrosine, sample sizes are generally small, and findings from a pilot esports study and other sources were mixed or did not reach statistical significance on primary endpoints. Additionally, research examining very high tyrosine levels in animal models found complex and sometimes opposing effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor depending on dose and duration, indicating that the relationship between tyrosine levels and brain function is not straightforwardly linear, and that broader conclusions about its cognitive benefits in healthy populations remain premature.
