L-Lysine for Nutrient Absorption

Preliminary evidence 17 studies

Research suggests that the evidence base for L-lysine specifically as a nutrient absorption aid is limited within the studies reviewed here. The most directly relevant finding comes from a 1993 animal study in Holstein calves, which found that blood flow to the small intestine linearly regulated lysine absorption, suggesting circulatory factors may govern how efficiently this amino acid is taken up in ruminants — though this finding may not translate directly to humans. Several other studies, conducted in cell models, fruit flies, and laboratory settings, offer broader context about amino acid transporter dynamics and how aging, gut microbiome changes, and intestinal pH can influence nutrient uptake generally, but these do not examine lysine specifically and were not designed to evaluate supplementation. The available evidence consists primarily of animal and in vitro studies rather than human clinical trials, meaning the research base is exploratory in nature and conclusions about lysine's role in nutrient absorption in humans should be drawn cautiously.
