L-Histidine for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 20 studies

Research suggests that L-histidine may play a meaningful role in supporting immune function, with the most directly relevant evidence coming from a 2025 mouse study showing that L-histidine supplementation helped alleviate T cell immune suppression during sepsis by restoring histidine metabolism disrupted by an elevated regulatory RNA molecule, and that this pathway appeared relevant to human sepsis outcomes as well. A 2023 cattle metabolomics study further observed that healthy animals maintained higher circulating L-histidine levels compared to those with respiratory disease, suggesting an associative link between histidine availability and immune resilience, though this study cannot establish causation. The available evidence consists primarily of animal studies and observational metabolomics work rather than human randomized controlled trials, which substantially limits the conclusions that can be drawn about direct benefits in people. Several other studies in this collection, while touching on immune metabolism and amino acid pathways more broadly, do not specifically address L-histidine, meaning the current body of evidence is promising but remains preliminary and would benefit from well-designed human clinical trials before stronger conclusions can be drawn.
