Kefir for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that kefir and its components may support immune function through several distinct pathways, including modulation of gut microbiota, reduction of inflammatory signaling, enhancement of natural killer cell and macrophage activity, and influence on the gut-skin and gut-brain axes. The available evidence comes from a mix of mouse studies, in vitro experiments, a small number of human clinical studies, and broader reviews — with animal and laboratory findings generally pointing in a supportive direction, while human evidence remains more limited and mixed. A 2026 review of 28 human clinical trials found associations between kefir consumption and improvements in immune-related markers, but cautioned that wide variation in kefir preparation, dosing, study duration, and participant populations makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions. Studies indicate that while the mechanistic evidence from preclinical models is promising, larger and more rigorously standardized human trials are needed before kefir can be confidently recommended as an immune-supporting intervention.
