Inulin for Blood Sugar Regulation

Moderate evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that inulin may support blood sugar regulation through multiple pathways, including reshaping gut microbiome composition, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids, and influencing metabolite activity related to glucose metabolism. The available evidence comes primarily from narrative reviews and animal studies — including mouse models of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy — with the majority of sources directionally supportive of a beneficial effect on blood sugar-related outcomes. Studies indicate that inulin's prebiotic properties appear central to these effects, with several animal studies finding reductions in fasting blood glucose and improvements in metabolic markers when inulin was administered, sometimes in combination with probiotic bacteria. However, important limitations apply: the bulk of mechanistic evidence comes from animal models rather than human clinical trials, and two studies in the set focused on inulin in unrelated contexts — kidney filtration research — and do not bear on this question, while a comparative fiber study noted that other plant fibers such as apple pectin showed stronger enzyme-inhibitory properties than inulin in some measures, suggesting the picture is not uniformly straightforward.
