Inositol for Sleep Quality

Preliminary evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that inositol has a modest but measurable relationship with sleep quality, though the evidence is limited and comes from varied study designs with different research questions. The most direct support comes from a single small randomized controlled trial in pregnant women, which found that myo-inositol supplementation improved several self-reported sleep quality measures compared to placebo. Observational and neuroimaging studies add a layer of complexity: higher myo-inositol levels in certain brain regions have been associated with poorer sleep quality in healthy older adults and with neuroinflammatory responses in conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, suggesting that elevated brain inositol may sometimes reflect a stress or glial response rather than a beneficial effect. A prospective cohort study further identified circulating inositol as a potential mediator between maternal sleep disturbances and offspring neurodevelopment, hinting at broader metabolic roles, while several other included studies were only tangentially related to inositol or sleep and contribute little direct evidence. Overall, the research base is too preliminary and heterogeneous to draw firm conclusions, and readers should note that most findings come from observational designs, specific populations such as pregnant women or clinical patients, and studies not primarily designed to test inositol as a sleep intervention.
