Hyaluronic Acid for Wound Healing

Strong evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that hyaluronic acid plays a meaningful role in wound healing, both as a naturally occurring component of the extracellular matrix and as an engineered material in wound dressings and delivery systems. The available evidence spans multiple study types, including systematic reviews, narrative reviews, randomized controlled trials, and experimental animal and laboratory studies, and is largely supportive in direction, with findings indicating that hyaluronic acid contributes to key phases of tissue repair including inflammation regulation, angiogenesis, and cellular regeneration, with its molecular weight influencing whether it promotes or suppresses inflammatory activity. Studies indicate that hyaluronic acid-based scaffolds, hydrogels, sponges, films, and nanoparticle delivery systems have shown promise in accelerating wound closure, supporting collagen production, and enabling targeted delivery of therapeutic agents, including in difficult-to-heal contexts such as diabetic wounds and surgical sites. However, it is worth noting that much of this evidence comes from animal models, in vitro experiments, and review-level syntheses rather than large-scale human clinical trials, and the one randomized controlled trial included here was small in scope, meaning that while the overall research direction is encouraging, broader and more rigorous human studies are still needed to fully establish the clinical effectiveness of hyaluronic acid-based wound care interventions.
