Hyaluronic Acid for Joint Health

Moderate evidence 26 studies

Research suggests that hyaluronic acid, delivered both through injection and oral supplementation, may offer meaningful benefits for joint health, particularly in the context of osteoarthritis. Studies indicate that injectable hyaluronic acid may improve joint lubrication, reduce inflammation, and complement rehabilitation programs, while oral supplementation has shown reductions in pain, stiffness, and functional limitations in both animal models and a randomized controlled trial involving patients with mild knee or hip osteoarthritis. The available evidence includes a 12-week placebo-controlled trial, a preclinical-to-clinical study using the WOMAC index, and several narrative reviews, most of which point in a supportive direction, though the oral RCT tested hyaluronic acid in combination with other ingredients such as krill oil and astaxanthin, making it difficult to isolate hyaluronic acid's individual contribution. One review also noted cases of liver injury associated with a multi-ingredient joint supplement containing hyaluronic acid among other compounds, with the responsible ingredient unidentified, and a systematic review found no significant racial or ethnic disparities in the use of hyaluronic acid injections, suggesting relatively consistent clinical application across populations — though overall the evidence base remains limited in scope and would benefit from larger, longer, and more ingredient-specific trials.
