Studies indicate that these compounds can neutralize free radicals, reduce markers of oxidative stress in cell and yeast models, and in some animal research, boost antioxidant enzyme activity in a dose-dependent manner, with the strength of these effects appearing to vary by plant species, variety, geographic origin, and extraction method. The body of evidence reviewed here consists primarily of in vitro laboratory tests, yeast model experiments, and animal studies, along with a smaller number of human trials focused more on cardiovascular outcomes than antioxidant activity specifically, meaning that direct evidence of antioxidant effects in humans remains limited. Two broader reviews acknowledge the genuine promise of hibiscus's bioactive profile while consistently calling for more rigorous, larger-scale human trials and standardized quality controls before stronger conclusions can be drawn about its practical value for oxidative stress reduction in people.
